چکیده

Gas diffusion layers (GDLs) are commonly known as one of the critical water management components in polymer electrolyte fuel cells with significant impact on electrochemical cell performance. Increasing levels liquid saturation GDLs, especially during high-current-density operation, limit gas transport from flow field channels to catalyst layer surfaces and hence reduce To provide GDL material selection modification guidelines, a thorough understanding underlying structural factors materials their influence is required. In this work, operando X-ray tomographic microscopy (XTM) was employed investigate behavior for three commercial i-E curves current jump characterization. Liquid volume fractions, profiles cluster distributions were analyzed understand observed discrepancies Furthermore, saturation-dependent relative diffusivities derived via direct numerical simulations, substrates performance thoroughly discussed respect structure thermal properties.

Water Flow in, Through, and Around the Gas Diffusion Layer

The gas diffusion layer (GDL) is an essential element of the electrodes in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The GDL makes electrical contact with the catalyst layers to provide a larger area to carry the electronic current from the catalyst to the bipolar plates reducing the resistance for current flow. The GDL must be porous to permit the flow of reactant gas from the gas flow ch...

Water Management in A PEMFC: Water Transport Mechanism and Material Degradation in Gas Diffusion Layers

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) directly convert the chemical energy of the reactants into electrical energy and usually consist of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) sandwiched between two catalyst layers (CLs), two porous gas diffusion layers (GDLs) often coated with a microporous layer (MPL) on the CL side, and two bipolar plates with embedded gas channels. Protons and electro...

Experimental and Numerical Pore Scale Study of Residual Gas Saturation in Water/Gas Imbibition Phenomena

Residual gas saturation is one of the most important parameter in determining recovery factor of water-drive gas reservoir. Visual observation of processes occurring at the pore level in micromodels can give an insight to fluid displacements at the larger scale and also help the interpretation of production performance at reservoir scale. In this study experimental tests in a glass micromod...
